If you feel a deceased relative might have had a life insurance policy and you think you may be a beneficiary on the policy, but you don’t know any of the life insurance policy information, below are some helpful steps to try to get the policy information and/or claim the death benefit.
- First try to contact the insurance agent. (If you know who he or she is.)
- Or contact the insurance company directly. (If you happened to know the name of the insurance company.)
- If neither of the above apply and you are pretty sure a deceased relative had a life insurance policy with you as a beneficiary, but you don't know the insurer's name or the agent. Then try using either using unclaimed.org web link and/or the Life Insurance Policy Locator at naic.org, a service run by state insurance regulators. (The NAIC's Life Insurance Policy Locator provides nationwide access for assistance with finding life insurance policies and annuities.)
- For life insurance policies covering pre-Vietnam era service members and service disabled veterans, conduct a search at insurance.va.gov/unclaimedfunds.
Hope that helps!
