Life Insurance - Are You Worth More Dead Than Alive?

A New York Times article by James Vlahos about some people with existing life insurance policies that become terminally ill, (or sometimes even non-terminally ill folks) and they sell their life insurance policy to a 3rd party in exchange for an immediate cash payment while still alive. The immediate cash settlement is generally a much smaller portion then what their beneficiaries would have received if they had kept their life insurance policy and died.
