Medicare - How The American Care Act Affects Medicare As Well As Older Adults Not On Medicare Yet.

I was reading a couple of Medicare Rights blog posts with their perspective on how older adults may be affected by the proposed new "American Health Care Act” (AHCA) as of this date. (March 17, 2017). However it may get revised later on, if approved at all. I thought I’d share their perspectives.

Here are just a couple of the takeaway bulletin points:

  • Older adults will be among those hardest hit by the proposal. If the AHCA becomes law, the number of uninsured would increase most significantly among low-income Americans ages 50 to 64. CBO finds that individual market premiums would spike for this very same group as a result of an “age tax” that would allow insurers to charge five times more for older enrollees than for younger ones.1

  • How the American Health Care Act (AHCA) - the Republican bill put forward to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) - would change the Medicare program. Often overlooked, the ACA’s many Medicare provisions altered both the financing and services of the program, including the closing of the Part D prescription drug “donut hole,” the addition of no-cost preventative services, and a small additional Medicare payroll tax on the highest earners. While the AHCA does not address the first two provisions, it does eliminate the additional payroll tax.1
