Medicare Launches Revamp for Heart Attacks, Hip Fractures

I read this ABCNews (Associated Press) article by Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar. So I thought I’d share this article with my blog post readers.

This year, to promote quality and contain costs, Medicare wants to start changing how it pays for treatment of heart attacks and broken hips. Beneficiaries and family members may notice a new approach.

Through some large scale experiments with some selected hospitals and doctors, they plan on doing some thing new. The goal is to test the theory that better coordination among clinicians, hospitals, and rehab centers can actually head off complications, prevent avoidable hospital re-admissions and help patients achieve more stable and enduring recoveries. If results back that up, then Medicare can adopt the changes nationwide.

Although this big push to reinvent Medicare through experimentation was under the Obama administration, it is unclear whether Donald Trump as president will continue the pace of change, slow it down, or even stop it altogether!1
